Eliud Kipchoge won the Melbourne Marathon on Sunday 11 October in 2:09:10, a course record. It was his first run in Melbourne and his first marathon win since 2023, ABC News reported. The 41-year-old broke away in the last 10 km and finished inside the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The old record of 2:09:12 was set by Kenya's Timothy Ronoh in 2022, according to Men's Fitness Australia. Kipchoge said waving to the crowd on the final half-lap cost him a few seconds.
Australia's Thomas Do Canto was second, about a minute and a half behind, and Australia's Reece Edwards third.
A run at a historic stadium
The course runs along St Kilda Road and around Albert Park Lake before the finish at the MCG, which hosted the start and finish of the 1956 Olympic marathon. "Let us run together here at the MCG," Kipchoge said, according to ABC News. Melbourne is part of his world tour of marathons on every continent, including Antarctica.
Women's race
New Zealand's Camille French won the women's race in 2:28:25. Australia's Sinead Diver was second and Ireland's Nichola Sheridan third.
